Neck Pain
Neck pain is usually caused by a strained muscle or ligament from sleeping in an awkward position, poor posture, or a minor injury. Most neck pain improves within a few days to weeks. A few warning signs point to something more serious.
What Is It
A neck strain is an overstretched or torn muscle. Whiplash is a neck strain from a sudden back and forth movement, often in a car crash. Long hours at a desk or looking down at a phone also strain the neck. Pain that runs into the arm may come from a pinched nerve.
Symptoms
- Pain and stiffness in the neck
- Trouble turning the head
- Muscle spasm or knots
- Headache starting at the base of the skull
- Pain spreading to the shoulders
- Numbness or tingling in an arm, from a pinched nerve
Not sure where the pain is coming from? Pain at the base of the skull often triggers tension headaches. Pain lower in the back may be a back strain.
Treatment
At your visit: A provider checks movement, strength, reflexes, and nerves. X-rays may be needed after an injury. Treatment focuses on pain and spasm, and physical therapy helps pain that lingers.
At home:
- Use heat or ice for 15 to 20 minutes at a time
- Keep moving gently, with slow neck stretches
- Adjust your screen to eye level and take breaks
- Sleep with a pillow that keeps your neck level
Most neck strains improve within 1 to 2 weeks.
