Broken Toe
A broken toe is a crack or break in one of the small bones of the toe, often from stubbing it or dropping something on it. Broken toe symptoms include pain, swelling, bruising, and trouble walking. Most broken toes heal well with simple care.
What Is It
The pinky toe and big toe are broken most often. Most small toe breaks heal with buddy taping and a stiff soled shoe. A broken big toe or a toe that looks crooked may need more care to heal straight.
Symptoms
- Pain right after stubbing or crushing the toe
- Swelling
- Bruising that may spread to nearby toes
- Pain when walking or wearing shoes
- A toe that looks crooked
- A popping sound at the time of injury
Not sure it’s broken? Many broken toes look like bad bruises. Pain in the top of the foot or ankle after a twist may be a sprained ankle. Read more about broken bones.
Treatment
At your visit: A provider examines the toe and an X-ray may be taken to check for a break. Most broken toes are buddy taped and protected with a stiff soled shoe. A crooked toe or broken big toe may need more care.
At home:
- Buddy tape the toe to the next toe with padding between
- Ice for 15 to 20 minutes and keep the foot raised
- Wear a stiff soled or roomy shoe
- Use over the counter pain relievers as directed
Most broken toes heal in 4 to 6 weeks.
