Sprain or Break? Signs You May Need an X-Ray
Not every injury needs an X-ray. Our providers use the same checks emergency rooms use, called the Ottawa rules, to decide. Come in for an X-ray if you notice:
- You cannot put weight on the leg or foot, or take four steps
- Pain or tenderness right over a bone, not just the soft tissue
- Swelling or bruising that shows up fast
- A joint or limb that looks bent, crooked, or out of place
- Numbness, tingling, or a finger or toe that looks pale
- A cough with fever or shortness of breath that has lasted more than a few days
If you are not sure, walk in. Our provider examines you first and orders an X-ray only if it will change your care.

What Happens During Your Visit
- Exam first. A provider checks your injury or illness and decides if an X-ray will help.
- The X-ray. It takes a few minutes and does not hurt. Remove jewelry or metal near the area.
- Results with you. Your provider reviews the images with you before you leave.
- Treatment. Splinting, medication, or a referral, all in the same visit.
Results
You get your provider’s findings during the visit. A board-certified radiologist also reads every X-ray, usually within 2 to 4 hours, and we contact you if the final report changes your treatment. If you need a CT or MRI, we arrange the referral. We can send your images to you or to your doctor on request.
Treatment in the Same Visit
If the X-ray shows a fracture or sprain, we treat it before you leave. Both clinics keep splints, walking boots, slings, and braces on site. We can also prescribe pain medication, give crutches when needed, and refer you to an orthopedic specialist for follow-up.
X-Rays for Children
We X-ray kids of all ages, and a parent can usually stay close by. Tell your child it is like taking a photo. It does not hurt, and they only need to hold still for a few seconds. See our pediatric urgent care page for more.
Is Digital X-Ray Safe?
Digital X-ray uses a low dose of radiation, focused only on the area being checked. Our equipment is registered with the State of Illinois and meets all state and federal safety rules. For children we use the lowest dose that gives a clear image. Let us know if you are or might be pregnant.
When to Go to the ER Instead
Call 911 or go to the emergency room for a bone breaking through the skin, a limb that is cold, numb, or badly bent, a head injury with confusion or vomiting, or trouble breathing. Urgent care cannot do CT or MRI scans.
Cost and Insurance
An X-ray at Vitality is an add-on to your urgent care visit. It costs $60 self-pay, with no facility fees, because we are an independent clinic and not part of a hospital. I cannot say enough good things about the company. I was pretty sick and decided to go to an urgent care. Vitality urgent care came in my search and I decided to bring the service home instead of going to an urgent care for the same price. I hate going somewhere in traffics, looking for parking and sitting in crowded rooms being exposed to other germs. The gentlemen that answer the phone asked me few questions about my symptoms. He gave me a two-hour window during which they arrived. The provider was friendly, super personal and interacted well with my entire family during the visit. They conducted both Strep and Flu test in my living room. Frankly, could not ask for better service.
