- PPD skin test — $35. Return in 48–72 hours for the read. Two-step available for employers who require it.
- QuantiFERON Gold blood test — $100. One visit, results in 2–3 days. Right choice after BCG vaccination or when a blood test is specified.
- Chest X-Ray — $60. If a screen is positive, the x-ray to rule out active TB happens here rather than by outside referral. Requires an outside order or evaluation by a Vitality provider.
- Tuberculosis clearance letter issued for the employer’s file.
TB skin test (PPD)
A small amount of fluid injected just under the skin of your forearm. It takes a couple of minutes.
You must come back in 48 to 72 hours to have it read. A trained person has to measure the reaction, and a skin test read outside that window does not count — it has to be repeated from the start. Come in Monday morning and your read window is Wednesday to Thursday. Plan the second trip before you take the first one.
You do not need an appointment for the read. Walk into either location.
Two-step TB test
Many hospitals, nursing homes, long-term care employers, and clinical programs require a two-step test for new hires — two skin tests spaced one to three weeks apart, each with its own read visit. It exists to catch an immune response that has faded over years and would otherwise read negative the first time.
Four visits total, across two to four weeks.
Check your form before you start. If your employer wants two-step and you get a single test, you will be sent back to do the whole sequence again. Tell us at the first visit and we will schedule the sequence with you.
TB blood test — QuantiFERON® Gold
A single blood draw. No return visit for a read, results in two to three days.
An IGRA — interferon gamma release assay — measures your immune system’s response to TB proteins in a tube rather than under your skin. Ask for this one if:
- You have had the BCG vaccine. BCG is routine in much of the world and can make a skin test read positive when you do not have TB. The blood test is not affected by it.
- You cannot reliably return inside 48–72 hours. Travel, shift work, a start date next week.
- Your employer or program specifies a blood test. Many hospital systems now do.
QuantiFERON Gold, QFT, TB Gold, and “the TB blood test” all refer to the same test.
TB clearance letter for your employer
We issue a TB clearance letter your employer or program can keep on file, documenting the test performed, the date, and the result. It is included with your test — there is no separate charge for it. Bring your employer’s own form if they have one and we will complete it during the visit rather than sending you back.
Who needs a TB test
Most people arrive here holding an onboarding packet. The ones we see most often:
- Nursing, CNA, medical assistant, and allied health students starting a clinical placement
- Healthcare workers — hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, home health, dialysis, dental
- School district employees — teachers, aides, bus aides, coaches, substitutes
- Childcare and daycare staff
- Food service workers where a local ordinance requires it
- Anyone whose employer handed them a form with a TB line on it
Bring the form. If you do not have one, we will still test you and issue the clearance letter.
I cannot say enough good things about the company. I was pretty sick and decided to go to an urgent care.
