Cloudy Urine
Cloudy urine is urine that looks milky or murky instead of clear. Cloudy urine is most often caused by dehydration or a urinary tract infection. It is usually not serious, but cloudy urine with other symptoms should be checked.
What Is It
Cloudy urine can come from white blood cells from an infection, minerals from diet, discharge, or concentrated urine when you are not drinking enough. Kidney stones and sexually transmitted infections can also cause it.
Symptoms
- Milky or murky urine
- Strong or unusual odor
- Burning when peeing
- Needing to pee often
- Pain in the lower belly or back
- Discharge
Not sure what is causing it? Cloudy urine with burning and urgency is often a UTI. Cloudy urine with discharge may be an STD.
Treatment
At your visit: A urine test checks for infection, blood, and other causes. A UTI is treated with antibiotics. Cloudy urine from dehydration clears with more fluids. Some causes need STD testing.
At home:
- Drink more water through the day
- Notice if it clears after drinking more
- Limit very salty or high protein meals
- Do not hold urine for long periods
