Cold Sores
A cold sore is a small cluster of fluid filled blisters on or around the lips caused by a common virus. Knowing how to get rid of a cold sore faster starts with treating it at the first tingle. Most heal within 1 to 2 weeks.
What Is It
Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus type 1, which most adults carry. After the first infection, the virus stays in the nerves and can reactivate. Stress, illness, sun exposure, cold weather, and hormone changes trigger outbreaks. Cold sores are also called fever blisters.
Symptoms
- Tingling, itching, or burning on the lip a day before blisters
- Small, fluid filled blisters on or near the lips
- Blisters that break and crust over
- Swelling and soreness
- Fever and swollen glands with a first outbreak
- Sores that return in the same spot
Not sure it’s a cold sore? A painful sore inside the mouth is more likely a canker sore. Crusted sores with a honey colored crust may be impetigo.
Treatment
At your visit: A cold sore is usually diagnosed by how it looks. Prescription antiviral medicine works best when started at the first tingle and can shorten an outbreak. Some people keep medicine on hand for future outbreaks.
At home:
- Apply an over the counter cold sore cream at the first tingle
- Use a cool compress to ease pain
- Use lip balm with sunscreen
- Do not pick at the scab
Most cold sores heal within 7 to 10 days.
