Common Cold

Common Cold: Symptoms, Treatment & When to Visit Us

The common cold is one of the most frequent illnesses we treat. Learn how to recognize it, care for yourself at home, and know when to come in.

What is the common cold?

The common cold is a viral infection of the upper respiratory tract — your nose, throat, and sinuses. It’s the most frequently occurring illness in both adults and children. Over 200 different viruses can cause a cold, but rhinovirus is responsible for the majority of cases.

Colds spread easily through respiratory droplets and contact with contaminated surfaces. Most healthy adults recover fully within 7–10 days, though some symptoms can linger longer.

Peak season in the Chicago area: Cold viruses circulate year-round, but are most common in fall and spring. In Illinois, expect a surge in cases from September through November, and again in March–April.

Common Cold Symptoms

Symptoms typically appear 1–3 days after exposure and can vary in severity. Here’s what to watch for:

Runny or stuffy nose — Often the first sign. Discharge may start clear and thicken over a few days.

Congestion — Nasal and sinus pressure is common, especially in the first 3–4 days.

Sore throat — Often appears early and usually resolves within a few days on its own.

Cough — A mild to moderate cough that may persist even after other symptoms improve.

Fatigue & body aches — Mild fatigue is common; significant body aches may suggest flu instead.

Low-grade fever — Adults may have a slight fever; higher fevers are more common in children.

Cold vs. Flu vs. COVID-19: How to Tell Them Apart

Several illnesses share overlapping symptoms. When in doubt, come in — we offer rapid on-site testing for flu, strep, COVID-19, and more.

Common Cold: Gradual onset · Runny/stuffy nose · Mild sore throat · Mild or no fever · Mild fatigue · Rarely serious

Flu (Influenza): Sudden onset · High fever common · Significant body aches · Extreme fatigue · Headaches · Can be serious

COVID-19: Variable onset · Loss of taste/smell · Shortness of breath · Fever & chills · PCR test to confirm · Variable severity

How to Treat a Cold at Home

There is no cure for the common cold, but these steps help your body recover faster and keep symptoms manageable:

Rest — Sleep allows your immune system to do its best work. Avoid pushing through illness — it prolongs recovery.

Stay hydrated — Water, broth, and warm teas help thin mucus and prevent dehydration. Avoid alcohol and caffeine.

Saline rinse — A saline nasal rinse or spray can relieve congestion and flush out viral particles from nasal passages.

Humidifier — Adding moisture to the air — especially during dry Illinois winters — soothes nasal passages and throat.

OTC medication — Decongestants, antihistamines, and pain relievers (like ibuprofen) can help manage specific symptoms.

Warm salt water gargle — Gargling with warm salt water can reduce throat inflammation and provide temporary relief from soreness.

Cold Care for Kids

Children under age 2 should not receive over-the-counter cold medications. For young children, focus on natural remedies: rest, increased fluids, a cool-mist humidifier, saline drops, and age-appropriate fever reducers (ask your provider about dosing).

When to bring your child in: Seek care if your child has a fever over 100.4°F (under 3 months), difficulty breathing, won’t eat or drink, shows signs of ear pain, or if symptoms worsen after 5–7 days. Our pediatric urgent care team at both Buffalo Grove and Lake Zurich locations is here to help.

When Should You Come to Vitality Urgent Care?

Most colds resolve on their own, but some symptoms warrant a visit. Come see us if you experience any of the following:

  • Fever above 103°F
  • Symptoms that worsen after 7 days or don’t improve after 10
  • Severe or worsening sore throat (may be strep)
  • Chest pain or shortness of breath
  • Ear pain or significant sinus pressure
  • Symptoms in a child under 3 months old

We offer rapid on-site testing for strep throat, influenza, COVID-19, RSV, and more — so you get answers the same visit. No appointment necessary. Just walk in.

How to Avoid Getting a Cold

The most effective prevention is consistent hand hygiene. Wash your hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after being in public spaces, touching your face, or caring for someone who is sick.

Wash hands often — The single most effective way to stop cold viruses from spreading.

Cover coughs & sneezes — Use a tissue or your elbow — not your hands — to prevent airborne spread.

Avoid touching your face — Cold viruses enter through your eyes, nose, and mouth via contaminated hands.

Disinfect surfaces — Regularly clean doorknobs, phones, keyboards, and shared surfaces at home and work.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a cold last? Most colds last 7–10 days. A cough or mild congestion can linger for up to 2 weeks. If you’re not improving or getting worse after 10 days, come in — it may have developed into a sinus infection or bronchitis.

Can urgent care treat a cold? Yes. While colds are viral and don’t require antibiotics, we can confirm the diagnosis, rule out flu, strep, COVID-19, or other infections, and recommend the right treatment plan. If you’ve developed a secondary infection, we can treat that too.

Will I get antibiotics for a cold? No — colds are caused by viruses, and antibiotics only treat bacterial infections. We’ll never prescribe antibiotics unnecessarily, but we will test for bacterial causes like strep if your symptoms suggest it.

Do I need a flu shot if I already had a cold? Yes. The cold and flu are caused by entirely different viruses. A flu shot protects you from influenza, not the common cold. We offer flu vaccines at both locations — no appointment needed.

Is the common cold contagious? Yes. You are most contagious in the first 2–3 days of symptoms and can spread the virus for up to 2 weeks. Stay home when symptomatic to protect others — especially young children and immunocompromised individuals.
