Frequent Urination
Frequent urination means needing to pee more often than usual. Frequent urination is most often caused by drinking more fluids, caffeine, a urinary tract infection, or pregnancy. New, sudden changes should be checked.
What Is It
Most people pee 6 to 8 times a day. A UTI causes frequent, urgent urination with burning. High blood sugar from diabetes makes the body pass more urine. An enlarged prostate, overactive bladder, and some medicines can also cause it.
Symptoms
- Needing to pee more than 8 times a day
- Waking up at night to pee
- Sudden urges to pee
- Passing small amounts each time
- Burning or pain when peeing
- Increased thirst
Not sure what is causing it? Frequent urination with burning is often a UTI. Frequent urination with a weak stream in men may be prostatitis.
Treatment
At your visit: A urine test checks for infection, sugar, and blood. Blood sugar may be checked. A pregnancy test may help. Treatment depends on the cause, and ongoing symptoms may need primary care follow up.
At home:
- Limit caffeine and alcohol
- Avoid drinking a lot of fluid before bed
- Notice how much and what you drink each day
- Do not hold urine for long periods
Frequent urination from a UTI usually improves within a few days of treatment.
