Urgent Care vs ER FAQ

How do I know whether to go to urgent care or the ER?

Go to the ER, or call 911, for anything that could threaten a life, a limb or eyesight, such as chest pain, signs of a stroke or severe trouble breathing. Urgent care is for illnesses and injuries that need care today but are not emergencies.

Is urgent care cheaper than the ER?

Usually, yes. For the same minor problem, urgent care generally costs much less than the ER. Without insurance, a basic visit at Vitality is $119.

Is urgent care billed the same as the ER?

No. Your plan treats them as different kinds of visits and sets your copay. Check with your insurance company that we are in network.

Can urgent care do X-rays?

Yes. Both Vitality clinics have digital X-ray on site every hour they are open.

Should I go to urgent care or the ER for a broken bone?

It depends on the injury. Urgent care can X-ray and splint a possible break in a wrist, ankle, hand or foot. Go to the ER for a bone pushing through the skin, a limb that looks bent the wrong way, or a serious injury such as a car crash or a bad fall.

Should I go to urgent care or the ER for a fever?

A fever without any of the warning signs above can be seen at urgent care. A baby younger than 1 month with a fever of 100.4°F or higher needs the ER. A baby 1 to 3 months old with that fever needs to be seen right away, so call your pediatrician or go to the ER.

Should I go to urgent care or the ER for stomach pain?

Go to the ER for sudden, severe belly pain or severe pain during pregnancy. A stomach bug with vomiting can be seen at urgent care.

Can I take my child to urgent care instead of the ER?

Yes, for problems that are not emergencies, like ear pain, a sore throat, a rash or a cut that needs stitches. Go to the ER or call 911 if your child has trouble breathing, is hard to wake, or shows any warning sign above. A baby younger than 1 month with a fever of 100.4°F or higher needs the ER.

Should I go to urgent care for chest pain?

No. Call 911 for chest pain, pressure or tightness. Do not drive yourself.

Do I need an appointment for urgent care?

No. You can walk in any time we are open, or book online to hold your place and wait at home.
