HFMD: Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease FAQ

Can adults get HFMD?

Yes, adults can get hand, foot, and mouth disease, but symptoms are usually milder.

Can my child go to daycare with HFMD?

No. Children should stay home until they are fever-free for at least 24 hours and blisters are healing or dry.

How long is HFMD contagious?

HFMD is most contagious during the first week. The virus may still spread through stool for several weeks after symptoms improve.

Is a doctor’s note needed to return to school?

Many schools and daycare centers require a clearance note. Vitality Urgent Care can provide this after an evaluation.

Can my child return to school with a rash?

Only if blisters are healing, dry, and no longer painful.

Should siblings stay home if one child has HFMD?

No, unless they develop symptoms. Monitor closely for early signs of illness.

Can we go to public places with HFMD?

No. Avoid parks, pools, and playdates until fully recovered to prevent spreading the infection.

Do I need to disinfect the entire house?

Focus on high-touch areas such as remotes, bathroom surfaces, toys, and bedding.

What if symptoms do not match HFMD exactly?

Visit urgent care for evaluation to confirm the diagnosis or rule out other conditions.
