Sore throat Vitality Urgent Care

What Is Pharyngitis?

Pharyngitis, commonly known as a sore throat, refers to inflammation of the back of the throat (pharynx). Depending on the cause, symptoms may include fever, headache, runny nose, cough, hoarseness, or rash.

What Causes a Sore Throat?

Sore throats can result from viral or bacterial infections, or from non-infectious causes such as smoking, allergies, dry air, or excessive coughing.

  • Viral infections are the most common cause and often accompany colds or the flu.

  • Bacterial infections such as Group A Streptococcus (strep throat) are less common but require specific medical treatment.

  • Environmental irritants like smoke or pollutants can worsen throat inflammation.

How Is Pharyngitis Treated?

Treatment depends on the underlying cause:

  • Viral pharyngitis typically improves with rest, fluids, and over-the-counter symptom relief.

  • Bacterial pharyngitis (strep throat) requires evaluation and may involve antibiotics prescribed by a licensed clinician.

If a sore throat lasts more than a few days, worsens, or is accompanied by fever or swollen glands, a medical evaluation is recommended to determine the cause and prevent complications.
